Relocation of print Indexes and Abstracts on the main (2d) floor

Beginning this week, Indexes and Abstracts shelved on the main (2d) floor of the Orlando campus library will be moved. Those series completely available online will be moved to remote storage. Those available partially or completely in print only will be moved to another location in the main library.

Records for all of these items will be updated in the library catalog to reflect the new location. Links to online versions will be included in the catalog record. Online indexes and abstracts will continue to be listed in the Articles and Databases A - Z list.

This move is the first step in a greater effort to ease overcrowding in the main library building. Please see the message posted in this NewsBlog from Director of Libraries, Barry Baker, regarding the relocation effort.

If you have questions about this project, or would like more information about the items being relocated, please contact Michael Arthur, Head of Acquisitions and Collections Services.

Location changes for some print journals that are available online, to ease overcrowding

During November 2009, a project to relocate some of the Orlando campus library print collection will begin.

A message from Director of Libraries, Barry Baker:

With the rapid increase in student enrollment and the continued growth of the collections, the Orlando campus library does not have adequate space for seating for students and faculty and for its collections. While for the past six years several options including a new building and expansion and renovation of the existing facility have been considered, it is not likely that either will happen in the near future given the economic realities of our times.

In order to provide for more seating to accommodate a growing student enrollment and to provide more useful space for students and faculty, the Libraries will have to remove some of the older print collection which is also available online. Later this Fall approximately 48,000 volumes will be moved into remote storage off campus. These materials are primarily print journals and indexes that are available online in collections subscribed to by the UCF Libraries such as JSTOR, IEEE, Annual Reviews, American Physical Society, Institute of Physics and American Chemical Society.

The move to storage of these volumes will create additional seating as well as space for continued growth of the print collection. At least 150 badly needed seats will be gained and will be helpful in alleviating crowding.

If you have questions about this project or would like to have more information about the titles to be placed in storage, contact Michael Arthur, Head of Acquisitions & Collections Services, marthur@mail.ucf.edu .

NetLibrary ebook of the month: Invisible China

Invisible China: A Journey Through Ethnic Borderlands
by Colin Legerton and Jacob Rawson

Chicago Review Press, 2009

Hailed as a "spectacular achievement" by Publishers Weekly.

In this eloquent and eye-opening adventure narrative, authors Colin Legerton and Jacob Rawson, two Americans fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Korean, and Uyghur, throw away
the guidebook and bring a hitherto unexplored side of China to light.

They journey over 14,000 miles by bus and train to the farthest reaches of China to meet the minority peoples who dwell there, talking to farmers in their fields, monks in their monasteries, fishermen on their skiffs, and herders on the steppe. As they uncover surprising facts about China's hidden minorities and their complex position in
Chinese society, they discover the social ramifications of inconsistent government policies--and some deep human truths as well.

Although not yet a part of UCF's collection, Invisible China will be provided with free, unlimited access through NetLibrary November 1-30, 2009 through the generosity of Chicago Review Press.
